Affect Your Hair
And What You Can Do About It
By Funda Shamsher Starleet Studio
Hormonal changes are a natural part of life, but that doesn’t mean they’re easy. For many women, perimenopause and menopause bring noticeable changes in hair texture, volume, and growth. If you’re experiencing more shedding, dryness, or thinning—you’re not alone, and it’s not your fault.
Let’s break down what’s happening and how to care for your hair with more love and intention.
🌸 Hormones and Hair: What’s Going On?
During perimenopause and menopause, estrogen and progesterone levels drop. These hormones help keep hair in its growth phase longer. When they decline, hair grows slower, sheds more quickly, and often feels thinner or more brittle.
At the same time, androgens (like testosterone) can become more dominant. This may shrink hair follicles, especially around the crown and hairline—leading to a more “diffused” type of hair loss.
💇♀️ Common Hair Changes During This Time:
Increased shedding or hair loss
Thinner ponytail or visible scalp
Dry, brittle texture
Slower growth
More frizz or loss of natural shine
✨ What You Can Do:
You don’t have to suffer in silence. Here are gentle and holistic ways to support your hair through this transition:
Scalp Health First A healthy scalp = better hair growth. Try scalp massages with essential oils or nourishing treatments to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation.
Gentle, Hydrating Products Avoid sulfates, alcohol-heavy sprays, and harsh brushing. Instead, choose moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and lightweight serums that restore softness and elasticity.
Targeted Supplements Collagen, biotin, omega-3s, and apoptogenic herbs like ashwagandha can support hormonal balance and hair regeneration.
Note: As hairstylists, we’re thrilled to share what we’ve learned through experience and education—but we’re not medical professionals. We can advise, not prescribe. Always check with your doctor before starting new supplements.
Lifestyle = Hair Health Sleep, stress, and nutrition all show up in your strands. Yoga, hydration, protein-rich meals, and lowering cortisol (stress hormone) help not only your mood—but also your roots.
Trim, Treat, and Talk Regular trims, glosses, and in-salon scalp treatments can make a huge difference. And never underestimate the power of a conversation. Talk to your stylist (like me!) or your doctor if hair changes feel overwhelming.
