If you’ve ever left the salon with shimmering, shiny, freshly-toned hair and thought, “What magic was that?” — you’re not alone. At Starleet Studio, I often get asked the difference between toner, gloss, and glaze. While they might sound similar, each one plays a unique role in your hair's look and feel.
Let’s break it down
🎨 Toner
What it is:A toner is a demi-permanent color used after lightening services (like highlights or balayage) to neutralize unwanted tones — think brassiness, yellows, or overly bright blondes.
What it does:
Balances hair color after bleach
Enhances or softens highlights
Adds cool or warm tones (like ash, honey, or beige)
How long it lasts:About 4–6 weeks, depending on your hair care routine.
Starleet Tip: I use toner like a final touch of paint on a masterpiece. It’s not just a “fix,” it’s part of the art.
💧 Gloss
What it is:A gloss is like a color-refreshing conditioner with shine — it can be clear or have a tint.
What it does:
Adds mirror-like shine
Smooths the hair cuticle
Enhances or refreshes existing color
How long it lasts:About 4 weeks — it gradually fades without harsh lines.
Starleet Tip: I love using gloss between color services. It’s like a mini refresh without full commitment.
🌫️ Glaze
What it is:A glaze is very similar to a gloss but usually more about shine than color. It’s often clear and acts like a topcoat for your hair.
What it does:
Adds softness and silkiness
Boosts shine and manageability
Helps seal the hair after color
How long it lasts:Typically 1–2 weeks, great before an event or vacation.
Starleet Tip: I recommend a glaze if you're prepping for a big event — think bridal hair, birthdays, or photoshoots.
✨ Which One Is Right for You?
It all depends on what your hair needs. Whether it’s removing brassiness, refreshing color, or adding shine — we’ll choose the best option together during your visit.
